Parents Buy Supplies for Teachers

By Molly Kelleher

KENNEWICK - It's not just students with school supply lists, teachers don't always have everything they need for class too.

Action news takes a look at one school asking parents for help in a new way.

Autumn usually means leaves falling, but at Canyon View Elementary, wind doesn't take down the leaves the parents do.

"We thought it was a good idea and it worked wonderfully," said Sara Migas.

Migas came up with the idea after her sister did something similar on the westside. The giving tree lets teachers list supplies they need, then a parent will take that leaf and buy it for them.

"Schools are always under funded so this is a good way to help. There's always a need in school," said Migas.

"I don't think parents realize or the public realizes how much we pay out of pocket," said Canyon View teacher Kathy Killand.

But go inside a classroom and see what one teacher spends out of pocket.

"I bought all of these math kits, all of those magnets and the calendar all of the charts," said Canyon View teacher Vicki Kirby.

Kirby says she spends up to $500 every year on school supplies. That's a significant expense on a teachers salary.

At the Kennewick School District, the starting pay is around $34,000 a year.

"I wish it was more equitable. We are a profession it would be nice if the pay scale reflected it," said Killand.

That's why it's the little things that can make the biggest difference.

"So what was on your wish list? A stapler. I was so blessed and I was down to my last stapler and someone bought it for me, that was huge," said Kirby.

Some things huge for one teacher, sprouting up from one little giving tree.
