WALLA WALLA -- A few days after a Kennewick man died from a gunshot wound on a camping trip in the Blue Mountains, his friend, is now charged with killing him.**

The autopsy results, reported Tuesday, reveal Kenneth Brooks of Kennewick died from a bullet to his neck.

His friend and co-worker at Bechtel, Robert Nelson from Walla Walla, is now charged with manslaughter.

People at the Blue Ridge Mobile Home Park in Walla Walla told Action News they don't know much about what happened.

And even if they did know, they won't tell.

People in this tight knit community are neighbors and friends with Nelson, the man now accused of shooting his friend, while camping.

Was this just a terrible accident?

"According to our reports and the Sheriffs, this was done in a reckless manner, that's why the charges for manslaughter were filed," Walla Walla County Prosecutor James Nagle said.

Deputies said Nelson called police Saturday to report he shot someone in the Blacksnake Road area. Action News uncovered pictures of the campsite from the Walla Walla County Sheriff's Office. Prosecutors said the men had camping gear, alcohol and a .44 magnum.

"They'd gone there to go camping, drinking and shooting," Nagle said.

Walla Walla Sheriff's deputies said this is where the details of the investigation get sketchy, since they said Nelson doesn't remember pulling the trigger.

Investigators believe Brooks was shot around 2 or 3 am Saturday. But said, Nelson waited to call police until he came back to his home.

Nelson then led police back to the campsite where they found the body.

In his interview with investigators, Nelson told sheriff's deputies a scary story of how he may have been reckless with a gun before.

"He told them that he was target shooting and that he had accidentally shot himself in the leg," Nagle said.

Nelson survived that accident, but this time a man is dead and police are still trying to figure out why.

Action News tried to reach both the families of Ken Brooks and Robert Nelson. Neither returned our calls.

Nelson's arraignment is tentatively scheduled in two weeks.

The sherriff's office did confirm, both men had criminal histories.
