KENNEWICK--Almost a year later, a woman accused of animal cruelty goes to trial.

Brandy Leighter was a well known advocate for animals.

Her reputation quickly changed when cops found dozens of cats and dogs, a snake, and animal carcasses in her home.

Prosecutors call it "good intentions gone bad," while the defense says it's more like "no good deed goes unpunished."

Detective Rick Runge with the Kennewick Police Department described Leighter's home as filthy and that it smelled like urine and feces.

We also learned today that dead animals were found in the freezer and some near skeletal cats were discovered in a litter box.
