Missing Girl Found at Franklin County Campground

By Holly Zuluaga

KENNEWICK--A nationwide search for a missing girl ends in Franklin County.

From Alabama to Idaho, the trail ended here in Franklin County.

Police are treating this as a kidnapping, because the girl is 14 and the guy she left with is 27.

Deputies say the pair met in cyberspace and ended up in Palouse Falls -- 70 miles north of Pasco.

Park Ranger Melinda Mckeen told action news that a park visitor tipped off cops after seeing the couple's pictures on the morning news.

She says the pair was at the campground through the weekend.

The Franklin County Sheriff thinks 27 year old Morgan Jones picked up the 14 year old girl in Boise and drove her through Oregon into Washington.

Morgan is charged with felony kidnapping.

The young girl was taken to the Sheriff's office in Franklin County.

Sheriff Richard Lathium told Action news this all started with the popular
online game, "World of Warcraft."

The internet doesn't stop a 27 year old from talking to a 14 year old.

It happens all the time.

In fact 1 in 5 teens have been sexually solicited online.

"It appears to be the typical thing that we see with teen girls where he convinces her that he loves her," Sheriff Richard Lathium said.

Devan hunt sees it way too often in her job at the Sexual Assault Response Center.

She says teens girls are lured in by older men online because they see it as exciting--and the internet seems safe.

"That's what is enticing for these girls is they finally have someone that understands them, they understand interests, they are playing this game with them, and preying on their vulnerabilities," Hunt said.

The luring doesn't end with games.

Social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook can easily connect kids with adults.

Devan says she sees kids treat it like it's not real life.

"Even putting information out there, there are so many ways to track your information. You're not safe," Hunt said.

Predators learn about what you like and say what you want to hear.

Devan says parents need to know who their kids are talking to.

"They aren't doing it because they care about how you feel. They are predators. If they cared they wouldn't try to get you to leave your family," Hunt said.

The Sheriff doesn't know how long Morgan spoke to the girl online, but it was long enough to convince Morgan to drive from Alabama to Boise to meet the child in person.

Even if she left willingly it's still a federal crime.

Morgan is being held at the Franklin County Jail.

Franklin County is still doing its own investigation, including charges for rape of a child.
