Toppenish Rodeo Won't Be Going Buck Wild
By Sade Malloy
Toppenish -- It's a 4th of July tradition 75 years in the making.
Tim Gonzales says, "My fondest memories are of the Rodeo just sitting in the bleachers watching the animals do their thing." About 7,000 people come out every year but the Toppenish grounds won't be seeing crowds this July. The Toppenish Rodeo & Livestock Association is in the middle of a lawsuit after a vendor was hurt at the Rodeo. Richard Halvorson, Toppenish Rodeo & Livestock says, "Our insurance agent defrauded us by not paying the policy and keeping the funds for himself." And that's when they realized they didn't have insurance. Halvorsorn isn't taking any chances this year he says they want to have all their ducks in a row before they take on the Rodeo again. Maria Valencia says, "I think it's sad because everybody's suffering you know." In the mean time they'll be focusing on smaller events like the Junior Livestock show and finishing this community center they started in the '90s. Richard Halvorson, Toppenish Rodeo & Livestock says, "Finish the interior of it so we can rent that thing out for everything from quinceaneras to public events." The sooner they can rent it the sooner they'll have extra cash for the Rodeo. Dan Ross says, "You betcha we're going to be back there next year, wouldn't miss it for the world." |
