Parents Arrested, Baby Taken from Grow House

RICHLAND-- Police say they received an anonymous call that led a raid, and landed them in a bathroom full of three-foot tall pot plants.

Police seized $25,000 worth of weed at the Hills Park home, drugs that would have ended up in schools, says Richland Police Captain Mike Cobb.

"Marijuana's going to be targeted at juveniles, that's where the money is," Cobb said. "We want to get it off the streets before it ever gets there."

A judge granted investigators a search warrant, and the couple was in cuffs in a matter of days.

"They didn't catch them soon enough, as far as I'm concerned," said Larry Brigham, a neighbor.

That's because the couple's ten-month old girl was living with them inside the house.

"They have no business having a baby if they're going to grow plants like that," said Brigham. "That's kinda irresponsible."

"It isn't surprising, but it does make you sad," said Cobb, about the baby who is now staying with relatives.

Police say 20-year old Brook Sakach and 23-year old Randall Reynolds, were running a sophisticated grow operation, utilizing expensive lights and equipment-- a production that was not just intended for personal use.

"In Richland, we do have a significant marijuana presence, and throughout the Tri-Cities," said Cobb.

And with the strong smell of the growing herb, it may have only been a matter of time before the couple was caught.

"The odor is quite pungent, and that might be one of the reasons we got tipped off," said Cobb.

"The idea that anybody would grow this stuff... it's a nuisance, it's a real nuisance," said Brigham. "Because you gotta look after the plant."

Other neighbors who spoke with Action News off camera, said good things about the couple. They said they didn't notice any traffic at the house. One woman even said Reynolds took care of her lawn without her asking.

Reynolds and Sakach are in Benton County Jail. Child Protective Services will decide where to place their little girl.
