PORTLAND, Ore. - Residents from Portland to Seattle reported seeing a large, bright object flash across the sky early Tuesday morning - and officials believe it was a meteor that apparently landed in eastern Washington.
KATU received numerous reports through e-mail and on the phone that the object was traveling west to east and was blue or green in color.
Workers at the control tower at the Portland International Airport reported seeing light from the object as well.
A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman in Seattle, Mike Fergus, said a pilot reported a flash and a burst of light near State Route 26 and the Lind-Hatton Road in the southeast corner of eastern Washington's Adams County.
The FAA originally attributed that sighting to a Horizon Airlines pilot but the agency and the airline now say that's incorrect. It was a private pilot.
The Adams County sheriff's office and State Patrol say they had no reports of an impact.
There have been no reports of damage or injury, and sheriff's dispatchers said they didn't know of any meteorite landing.
A huge ball of light is seen on the horizon where the meteor passed out of view.
Here is a sample of some e-mails we received:

It was quick and very much like when transformers burst during an ice storm. It's windy, and I was thinking maybe lightening and rain, but there's nothing but a good breeze blowing right now. We're also on the PDX flightpath, so I hoped that some small plane hadn't crashed again. Meteors...so awesome! Have a great day!

I could swear the color was bright green. No noise that I could tell. I went outside for a moment but saw no smoke trail, or indication. Maybe it was a piece of debris from an orbiting object? (i.e. satellite debris?) Very frightening for a moment. It'll be interesting to find out what it was. Hope not an airplane...
