PASCO -- Is a 6 year old in Benton County worth more than a 6 year old in Franklin County?
It may seem like a cold hearted question but it's real life.
A state agency pays more to day care providers in Benton County than it does to providers in Franklin County.
And now some centers claim a crisis is coming.
The State DSHS provides services for low income families.
The rate for reimbursement to child care services in Franklin County is less compared to neighboring Benton County.
Here's an example, a daycare in Benton County would get almost 23 dollars for a school aged child -- compared to around 19 dollars for the same child in Franklin County.
The dollar difference may seem small but even the Boys & Girls Club claims to feel a pinch.
"With 90 thousand when we have things that are worn out we would replace them before they broke, now we just don't have the ability to do that," said Greg Falk the President of the Boys & Girls Club.
DSHS set rates back in 2003.
They used a survey to do the math.
Since then the State's used those same numbers to figure out increases.
Even though things have changed.
State Representative Larry Haler agrees that information is outdated.
He hopes to convince other lawmakers to find supplemental money from next year's budget to help them out.
