WEST RICHLAND, Wash. -- You may have seen West Richland PD's new mobile command unit rolling around town.

And in order to squash rumors that they're spending an exorbitant amount of money in acquiring it, they opened it up to us.

The RV has been in service for about a year and was acquired at zero cost to the department.

West Richland got the rig as part of a federal surplus program. They've used it for processing crime scenes and for public appearances.

"It wasn't something that we took budget money from a different project or different equipment and put into this, and so as we acquired those relationships, we were able to put things on it, and now it's deployable," says Chief Brian McElroy.

Much of the apparatus inside the rig was donated by local businesses. That means the only real cost to the department is fuel.
