PASCO, Wash. -- Prosecutors in the Tri-Cities have announced a new initiative intended to deter metal thieves.

Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney Shawn Sant said Wednesday that Benton and Franklin County officials have created a "No Buy List" for scrap metal businesses.

The list includes anyone convicted of theft, burglary, robbery, possession of stolen property or a number of drug-related charges in the last four years. If a scrap metal business buys metal from anyone on the list, it will be cited with a misdemeanor.

Sant says the list was sent to local recycling companies last week and that he has already received feedback that it is working.

The list is based on conviction data from Benton, Franklin, Walla Walla and Yakima Counties.
