The crime happened after deputies say the men burst into the family's home near Oakdell Egg Farms. The girl was fondled and nearly suffocated.
The child ran to her aunt's bedroom screaming, "Someone tried doing something to me. Someone tried raping me. He tried touching me and took off my panties."
She escaped being raped but the incident was no less traumatic.
Victims say the men went straight for the kids.
The child's aunt said, "At 2 am I heard both my kids, my niece and my kids screaming, like yelling, yelling."
A woman who lives at the home spoke to us about the invasion. She asked that her identity be concealed. Afraid the suspects might come back.
Deputies say Hofler and Gunter came in through an unlocked door.
They were arrested right on the property. Both face burglary and attempted rape of a child charges. A conviction could bring life in prison. A third person was found with the men. Investigators are still looking into her role in the incident.
According to the police report about $2500 worth of damage was done to the property. A loss the victim says she was will to take so long as her family wasn't hurt.
Her kids are devastated at having their stuff stolen. "My Xbox, they need to pay my Xbox. I was like papi, good thing they didn't have weapons and that they didn't hurt you guys."
For now, she's not willing to let the kids out of her sight. She wants to be with them at all times to help them get over this nightmare.
"I'm probably going to take them to counseling because I don't want them to be traumatized forever. I think my niece is going to need it, too."
Deputies think this was a random target and the men do not know the family. Both defendants are due back in court next week.
The Franklin County Sheriff's department has set up a donation account for the victims at US Bank. Funds can be deposited in account number 153565019459 or to "The Family In Need From Oakdell Farms account.
