Port of Kennewick saving money
KENNEWICK, Wash -- KEPR learned some big savings came from demolishing waterfront property near Columbia Drive.

First -- the Tri-Cities SWAT team used the old motels for training. Then -- the Port of Kennewick hired inmates from Coyote Ridge to remove what was left. This cost less than nine dollars an hour for the whole crew. Officials say this is not a new practice for the port.

The port is always looking for ways to save tax-payer dollars. We work for the public, so we're being good stewards of our resources and we're looking for every opportunity to save dollars," says Tana Bader-Inglima, who works for the port.

Hiring the inmates likely saved 23 thousand in taxpayer dollars.
