New Toyota Center sign will cost $400,000
KENNEWICK, Wash -- The dated sign outside the Toyota Center sparked a lot of conversation on our Facebook page. Replacing it will cost about $400,000. Your taxpayer dollars will cut the check.

Many commenters felt that was way too much. The current sign was outdated when it was installed in the 80's. The new one will be top-of-the-line technology.

Corey Pearson is the executive director for the company that manages the Toyota Center. He told KEPR, "The one thing that you have to remember is that this is a big advertising component for the entire campus and especially the Toyota Center."

Kennewick contracted Venuworks to work on the project. They explained the $400,000 is actually a bargain. Similar signs can cost well over a million. Advertising dollars along with hotel taxes will be used to pay off the sign in the long run.

For those asking, "If it ain't broke, why fix it?", it turns out the current sign isn't such a bargain to keep around. Each light bulb costs $800 to replace. And when the sign froze up recently, they had to reboot it with a floppy disk.
