KGH launches new residency program.
KENNEWICK - Kennewick General Hospital will be the first teaching hospital in the Tri-Cities.

It's launching a new residency program. The first interns will arrive this summer.

A residency gives med school grads a chance to work hands-on with the help from experienced doctors. Doctors involved with the program say it will be a big step in getting residencies to the part of the state.

"We are opening up residencies all across Washington state, but you might be in Seattle or Spokane," says Dr. Sheila Dunlop, director of the new program, "It's a long ways to get to residencies here in the rural areas"

Residents will be part of a three-year program in family and internal medicine.

The hospital has a continuing partnership with Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences in Yakima.
