WASHINGTON - Changing those speed limits may soon fall on local authorities.

Right now it requires approval from the state.

That red tape slows down the adjustments. Cities must go through engineering and traffic investigations.

If a new law passes individual cities would be able to drop a 25-mile an hour speed limit to 20 if it's safer.

They can also raise it as high as 60 if it made sense.

The bill is headed for the transportation committee.
