KENNEWICK, Wash. - Having your car broken into can be fairly commonplace especially if you leave your doors unlocked. It's not as common to have the whole car disappear. Erasmao Aleao has had some close calls in recent weeks. He isn't willing to take any chances.

Erasmao said, "The alarm sounds in the middle of the night, you come out of your house, you're in danger too, because you never know what they go, they can have weapons."

Just this weekend a stolen car was recovered on Fifth Place in Kennewick. Two other cars vanished just blocks away on Fourth Place and Clearwater Avenue.

This may be a recent spike but it seems as though Kennewick Police are reporting around the same amount of stolen car cases year to year. Twelve cars were taken last November. Eleven this year, with one attempted to be taken and these numbers aren't quite official yet.
More thefts could be added to the total.

Police say they have just as much of a chance in figuring out the who and the why as they do in finding the stolen vehicle. It comes down to a combination of good police work and simple luck to break the case. Some neighbors tell me they've also given up trying to figure it all out and just wait for the day they'll become victims, too.

Erasmao said, "I leave it open, I mean you know, I'll lock the car anyway and am going to lose the window."

KPD worries this invites more crime. Cars are often stolen and stripped, sold for parts, money used for drugs. Others taken for joyrides.

Erasmao would rather cut his losses when it comes to car thieves.

"It doesn't matter what you do, they're gonna do it, they're gonna do it," he said.

KPD tells KEPR that they are also seeing more stolen vehicle crimes involving insurance fraud this year than in years past.
