The Schrammie: They say it's not about the money

By Ken Schram

They say it's not about the money.

They say it's really about safety.

Well if that's the case, since most people are already safe, why are they demanding even more cash?

So would Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste step out of the bank vault and come on down.

This is about the new "Click it or Ticket" campaign.

Even the state patrol admits that over 96 percent of drivers here in Washington wear seatbelts; the highest of any state in the country.

Apparently, that's just not good enough.

Seems the patrol has created a special technique to spot unbuckled motorists at night.

So guess who's out after dark ready to issue an even more expensive ticket?

You got it: state tax collectors in Smokey the bear hats.

Now I happen to believe that not wearing a seat belt is stupid.

I also happen to believe that mommy police tactics based on nanny laws are intrusive.

And so are fines that have jumped from $101 to $112.

Anyway, for enthusiastically being at the beck and call of the Washington State Traffic Safety Commission; for your unbridled willingness to suck more money from our pockets into the state coffers and for being just a few steps away from holding our hand when we cross the street, take a bow chief, 'cause this "Schrammie" is for you.
