Ken Schram: Sounding Off On A State Income Tax Proposal

KEPR

By Ken Schram

Here's something to make your skin crawl.

Three words: state income tax.

It's on the table down in Olympia.

All I can say is: What the hell are the two Democratic senators who are sponsoring this HJR 8209 thinking?

Now before I fly too far off the handle, I'll remind you that I've long been an advocate for tax reform in this state.

I think it's necessary and long overdue.

And as part of the approach to overall tax reform, I've suggested an income tax.

But not this.

HJR 8209 is just a blatant attempt to let the state dig deeper into our pockets.

Where's the reduction in property taxes? Where's the dumping of the business and occupation tax? Where's the state eliminating its portion of the sales tax?

In short, where's the equity and fairness?

Answering my own question: There is none.

There's just this inane proposal to shove another tax down our throats.

By sponsoring this measure, Senators Rosa Franklin and Jeanne Kohl-Welles obviously assume the people of this state are complete idiots.

Either that or they're out to kill any possible tax reform discussion that has an income tax component.

Either way, this measure reeks.

Anticipating that some of folks might want to share their thoughts on this issue with the Senators, I've supplied a link so that you can e-mail them.
