KENNEWICK, Wash. - The Kennewick Police Department swore in a new officer today, giving a special needs student a chance to go on patrol.

Karter Childers always dreamt of becoming a police officer. With the help of his best friend, Zebbie Castilleja, he was able to serve the community.

Chief Ken Hohenburg extended the invitation to become an honorary patrolman.

It's only the second time he's done so in his 11-years with the force.

Zebbie said, It was very important to me when I learned that Karter wanted to be a police officer, instantly I knew I wanted to do this for him."

"I never served I always wanted to but this is a dream come true," said Karter.

Karter also received a special pen and certificate for his honorary service.
